How to prevent summer slump in kids -Veteran homeschool mom and former teacher tips

Afraid of Summer slump?

Let me give you some mom Protips - homeschooler veteran homeschooling here- for ten plus years - of how you can prevent summer slump.

  1. leaving library books in the car having reading time in the car to and from stuff

  2. listening to educational podcasts- like “Greeking Out” (see link: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/3dec5e50-cadf-41c4-ad51-d4322b4ccf45/greeking-out-from-national-geographic-kids?ref_=dmm_acq_mrn_p_ds_rhsr_z_-m_c_645517265443_t_dsa-1789241054636&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiIOmBhDjARIsAP6YhSWELSbMjpCjWVqlPAuwPMrkaQh9pXx5Hvec8oHef70FFnj2FPGxPMoaAhKfEALw_wcB) or some of the other natgeo kids podcasts- “brains on” is a great podcast. (See link : https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/0ea69c7d-0bca-44aa-8396-dc2eb04db607/brains-on-science-podcast-for-kids?ref_=dmm_acq_mrn_p_ds_rhsr_z_-m_c_645517265443_t_dsa-1789241054636&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiIOmBhDjARIsAP6YhSVTLONJxMXChoMIXLgKv52Vc51ijoY_2_UhbjbO0xEQJv1XrHFHZg0aAuUHEALw_wcB)

  3. audiobooks in the car.

  4. I subscribe to YouTube Prime-And so having a subscription to PBS Kids, National Geographic, History Channel, and And I can just have that on the iPad in the car, on the way to do stuff.

  5. At home -before they earn screen time, they need to have like a certain amount of reading time, a board game needs to happen every single day.

So that way, you can make sure that your kids are staying sharp during the summertime.

as a former teacher,I can tell you, it takes about six weeks to reteach skills and abilities the kids have lost in the summertime. (See article here: https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/reteaching-an-issue-after-summer-break/2013/07)

Get ahead of the game. Make sure your kids are learning during the year- learning in the car -learning is you're going to and from activities.

Making sure you have a habit of of reading at home, playing board games together, doing something.

So that, by the time they get into school, I'm going to let you know-they will be sharper, they're going to have better public speaking skills, they are going to have better listening skills.

They're just gonna get the information faster.

You'll thank me later.
